Since 1896, the Haggerty family has been serving the transportation needs of Chicago. It started in 1896 when John Patrick Haggerty, great grandfather to co-owners Mike and Dick Haggerty, began the Haggerty Livery Company on Clark Street on Chicago's south side. He sold and maintained horse drawn carriages and continued his successful business into the 1920's. His son, Richard E. Haggerty Sr., raised five daughters and seven sons. Three of those sons entered the automotive business and came to own GM dealerships.

Jack Haggerty, Mike Haggerty's father (Dick's uncle) was one of those sons. In 1952, Jack Haggerty founded the Haggerty name in the automotive business when he opened a Chevrolet dealership on Chicago's South side. The success of this dealership earned him the recognition in 1956 and 1957 as the #1 Chevrolet Salesman in the World. Mike learned the automotive business from the ground up. Starting in the parts department he worked his way into sales and then into management.

Co-owner Dick Haggerty got his start in the car business selling new Pontiacs in 1975. This was after a two year stint in South Vietnam and graduating from University of Illinois at Chicago Circle. Cousins Mike and Dick would up living next door to each other in Chicago's Beverly neighborhood in 1981. It was at that time they rolled up the fence between their homes and decided to strike out on their own in the car business.

Their first project as partners was a shuttered Chevrolet dealership at 67th and Western Avenue on the South Side. Haggerty Chevrolet opened in November 1982. Based on a commitment to customer service and satisfaction, Mike and Dick were able to make Haggerty Chevrolet successful with customers coming from the South Side, South Suburbs and Northwest Indiana.

They quickly followed with Haggerty Chrysler in Chicago in 1983 and another Haggerty Chevrolet. This Chevy dealership in Northwest Indiana was purchased in 1985. But It was 1988 that they made their best dealership acquisition, that was when they opened Mike Haggerty Pontiac-GMC Truck in Oak Lawn. The dealership grew rapidly and has been Pontiac's largest sales volume leader numerous times in Chicagoland and the State of Illinois. The store has earned numerous #1 rankings from General Motors in Customer Satisfaction as well.

In 2003 they built a state of the art service facility to bring the most advanced technology for servicing all GM vehicles. In 2004 General Motors awarded them the Buick franchise- after it had been struggling on 95th Street. It was also in 2004 that they built the ultra modern independent Mike Haggerty VW - just down the street on Cicero Avenue.
